Women's suffrage in New ZealandHororata District, in the Malvern Ward of Canterbury, has a special connection to the history of women’s suffrage in New Zealand. Though the history of the Women’s Suffrage Bill of 1893 is relatively well known, the local women of Hororata District who lent their support to the movement are still largely invisible.
This Hororata Historical Society project aims to bring to light the women of Hororata District who supported suffrage and signed the historic 1892 and 1893 petitions. Proudly supported by
the Ministry for Women’s Suffrage 125 Community Fund. |
Celebrating the Women of Malvern
At least sixty three women from Hororata District in the Malvern Ward signed the 1892 and 1893 petitions in support of the enfranchisement of women.
By placing their marks on paper, in a small way they helped to change the history of New Zealand.
These are some of their stories.
