EMILY OLIVEREmily Wagstaff was born in London on the 6th of March 1836. She married William Oliver on the 18th March 1855 at Cripplegate, London. The family emigrated to New Zealand in 1857 on board the Glentanner. The couple took up land in Hororata District in 1860. Her obituary notes that at that time William made a living carting wool and grain to Christchurch. The later entry in the Cyclopaedia of NZ notes William was a freehold farmer.
According to Emily's obituary, the couple had at least four children, one son and three daughters. They included Emily Ann (1860), Jessie (1862) and Herbert (1872). The names of other children are yet to be confirmed. There appears to have been another William and Emily Oliver, living in Taranaki, raising a family around the same time. It is difficult to know which of the births registered at this time belong to which couple. Emily signed the petitions alongside her daughter Emily Ann Gray, who was by that time married, and possibly also her other daughter Jessie. After signing the petition, Emily Snr also enrolled to vote, and the 1893 Electoral Roll lists her occupation as Household Duties. Emily died 27 September 1896 and is buried in the cemetery at St John's Hororata alongside her husband William, who died 8 June 1907 aged 73. Their children Herbert Oliver and Emily Ann Gray are also buried in the same cemetery.
