ROSE HALLRose Anne Dryden was born in Cottingham, Yorkshire, on the 22nd December 1828 to William and Jane Dryden. She was the youngest of eight children. Her father William was a solicitor in Hull. The Dryden family was well known to the Hall family, and the family connection was cemented by two marriages. Agnes Dryden married George Hall, and Rose was married to John Hall in 1861. John then returned to New Zealand, where he was already established, with his new wife. They lived for a time in Christchurch, before moving to Rakaia Terrace Station in Hororata.
Rose and John had six children, Godfrey Dryden (1862), Mildred (1863), Wilfred (1864), John Dryden (1865), Mary (1867), and Godfrey (1868). By the time of their marriage, John Hall had entered the realm of politics in Canterbury, and became a Member of Parliament. Amongst his many achievements over several decades in various offices was his championing of Women's Suffrage. Rose supported and encouraged her husband in this cause, and played her part by leading the organisation for collecting signatures for the vital petitions in the Malvern District. Rose and her daughter Mildred held meetings, hosted entertainments, and went door to door to garner support from local families. The charitable work Rose undertook in the region no doubt meant she was held in high esteem. Her obituary in The Press notes that she was particularly well regarded for her work with the Mother's Union, and for her work with the local Sunday School. Rose signed both the petitions and registered for the 1893 Electoral Roll, which lists her occupation as Household Duties. Rose died 12 May 1900 aged 71 years, and is buried at St John's Church Hororata alongside her beloved husband John, who died 25 June 1907.
